How Much Does It Hurt?
A body map of where tattoos tend to hurt more and less, front and back, from 20 years behind the machine. Tap or hover any pin for the spot — the full breakdown is below.
Front
Back
Mild
Fleshy, away from bone. Most people handle it easily, even first time in the chair.
Moderate
Some bite, especially after an hour. Still very manageable for most clients.
High
Thin skin, or close to bone and nerve clusters. Expect it to test you.
Severe
Right on bone, a joint, or a nerve-dense spot. Short sittings, or grit your teeth.
Spot by Spot
Same 14 front points and 12 back points as the diagram above, grouped by how much they tend to hurt.
Mild
5 spots| F1 | Outer shoulder | Thick deltoid muscle, far from bone. A common first-tattoo spot. |
| F4 | Outer forearm | Flat and fleshy. Most people barely notice it past the first few minutes. |
| B3 | Shoulder blade | Broad and muscled. Easy to sit through even for a long piece. |
| B4 | Back of upper arm | Loose skin over the tricep. Low on most people's radar. |
| B11 | Calf | Meaty and forgiving, though the buzz can tickle more than sting. |
Moderate
6 spots| F7 | Chest / pec | Manageable over muscle, sharper where it thins near the collarbone. |
| F9 | Stomach | Soft tissue shifts under the needle, which some feel more than the pain itself. |
| F11 | Front thigh | Solid muscle most of the way down. A good canvas for larger pieces. |
| F13 | Shin | Thin cover over bone. Fine in short sittings, fatiguing in long ones. |
| B8 | Lower back | Good padding off to the side of the spine. One of the easier back placements. |
| B9 | Butt | Mostly fat and muscle. Surprises people by how easy it is. |
High
4 spots| F2 | Armpit / inner bicep | Thin, ticklish skin close to lymph nodes and nerves. |
| F8 | Ribs / side torso | Thin skin stretched over bone with every breath. Sessions run shorter here. |
| B1 | Back of neck / hairline | Dense nerve endings, and the buzz carries straight to the skull. |
| B10 | Back of knee | Thin, creased skin over tendon. Awkward to hold still for, too. |
Severe
11 spots| F3 | Inner elbow crease | Bone right under thin skin, and the crease moves with every flex. |
| F5 | Hands & fingers | Almost no cushion between skin and bone. Hurts the whole session. |
| F6 | Sternum | Bone directly under the skin, center of the chest. Breathing makes it worse. |
| F10 | Groin / inner thigh | Thin, sensitive skin in a spot most people guard instinctively. |
| F12 | Kneecap | Bone, tendon, almost no padding. One of the least forgiving spots on the body. |
| F14 | Top of foot | Tendons and small bones sit right under the surface. |
| B2 | Upper spine | Straight onto vertebrae between the shoulder blades. Thin skin, hard bone. |
| B5 | Elbow point | The tip of the bone itself. Sharp, specific pain. |
| B6 | Back of hand | Tendon and bone with almost nothing between them and the needle. |
| B7 | Lower spine | Vertebrae again, lower down. Long spine pieces get broken into stages for this reason. |
| B12 | Achilles / heel | Tendon and bone packed tight under thin skin. |
From the Chair — A Few Practical Notes
- Eat something first.Low blood sugar makes any spot feel worse, and raises the odds of feeling faint.
- Sleep beats numbing cream.A rested body handles pain better than most topical products do.
- Breathe on a rhythm.Slow, steady breathing through the worst spots shortens how long they feel bad.
- Long pieces get broken up.Multiple sessions beat white-knuckling six hours over bone.
